Lanny
Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band is
an educational program designed to provide young musicians
and their audience the opportunity to experience Texas
ranch dance traditions. Student musicians develop musical
skills through ensemble performance and the study of
a traditional art form. Their presentations connect
audiences of all ages to the cultural roots of Texas.

• Concerts
by Lanny Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band offer a performance
of historic music from the days of cowboy and ranch dances on the
Texas Plains. The group is a compliment of fiddles, guitars, piano,
string basses, drums, and vocals. An extensive repertoire of traditional
two-steps, waltzes, schottisches, and polkas, emphasizes three-part
harmony and improvisation. Musical selections are varied with dialog
on historical content of the music and demonstrations of dance steps.

Ranch
Dance • Ranch
dances provide the general public with an opportunity to dance in
the traditional Texas style. Hosted by Lanny Fiel and the Ranch
Dance Fiddle Band, a repertoire of authentic historic music is performed
for dancing in a live setting. Held in conjunction with Dance Workshops,
novice participants reinforce their lessons by mingling with seasoned
dancers. The program is styled to immerse participants of all ages
in the experience of their common heritage.

for school assemblies feature Lanny Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle
Band in a concert designed to introduce students to traditional

to authentic sources and diverse cultural roots. From courtly balls
to prairie fandangos, students journey through the past, hearing
music from around the world as it evolved into a distinct West Texas
style.

adapted to Texas history classes, the program features lessons in
the oral tradition, bilingual songs, the development and evolution
of traditions, and extracurricular learning activities.

Concert • Orchestra
concerts feature joint performances by junior high and high school
orchestras and Lanny Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band. Scheduled
in conjunction with a series of Orchestra Workshop rehearsals, the
emphasis on a high standard of musical discipline is brought to
bear in live performance. In particular, the program is designed
to present a historical perspective, encouraging young musicians
and the audience to broaden their awareness of the regions
musical heritage.

Fiddle
Workshop • Fiddle
workshops by Lanny Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band provide an
opportunity to explore the instrument from an ensemble perspective.
Within the setting of a fiddle section, sessions provide instruction
in melodic study, three-part harmony, and improvisation. Fundamentals
of tone production and intonation are presented as learning aids,
and historical background of selections is used to demonstrate style.
All participants are furnished sheet music and an audio recording
of the session.

Texas style. Sessions include demonstration and instruction on two-step,
waltz, polka, schottische, and specialty numbers, including Ten
Pretty Girls, Coming Through the Rye, Varsouviana,
and Little Brown Jug. Historical reference to custom
and manners is incorporated in the workshop. Dance sessions with
multiple classes culminate in a Ranch Dance.

are employed to focus on historical background and the study of ensemble
technique, tone production, and listening skills. Emphasis is placed
on the parallels between opposing musical styles. Workshops are conducted
in a rehearsal setting and culminate with a recording and Orchestra
Concert.

Group Lesson • Group
fiddle lessons conducted by Lanny Fiel are styled according to the
level of proficiency of each individual participant in a session.
Within the context of learning several tunes, students are exposed
to the fundamentals of technique, ear training, harmony, improvisation,
and style. Sheet music and a cassette recording of the lesson are
furnished for each participant. Group lessons are designed to coordinate
with both Fiddle Workshops and Ensemble Workshops.

Seminar • A
project seminar by Lanny Fiel provides information on how to establish
and develop an arts oriented educational program. Drawing from over
three decades of personal experience, Fiel offers an insightful presentation
on his founding of the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band through a merging of
music, history, education, and technology. Using the Ranch Band as
a model, the seminar holds applications for similar programs and other
projects in related or non-related fields.
