Lanny Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band is an educational program designed to provide young musicians and their audience the opportunity to experience Texas ranch dance traditions. Student musicians develop musical skills through ensemble performance and the study of a traditional art form. Their presentations connect audiences of all ages to the cultural roots of Texas.

Concert Concerts by Lanny Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band offer a performance of historic music from the days of cowboy and ranch dances on the Texas Plains. The group is a compliment of fiddles, guitars, piano, string basses, drums, and vocals. An extensive repertoire of traditional two-steps, waltzes, schottisches, and polkas, emphasizes three-part harmony and improvisation. Musical selections are varied with dialog on historical content of the music and demonstrations of dance steps.

Ranch Dance Ranch dances provide the general public with an opportunity to dance in the traditional Texas style. Hosted by Lanny Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band, a repertoire of authentic historic music is performed for dancing in a live setting. Held in conjunction with Dance Workshops, novice participants reinforce their lessons by mingling with seasoned dancers. The program is styled to immerse participants of all ages in the experience of their common heritage.

School Assembly Performances for school assemblies feature Lanny Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band in a concert designed to introduce students to traditional Texas music. In particular, the program is designed to present a historical perspective, encouraging young musicians and the audience to broaden their awareness of the region’s musical heritage.

Fiddle Workshop Fiddle workshops by Lanny Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band provide an opportunity to explore the instrument from an ensemble perspective. Within the setting of a fiddle section, sessions provide instruction in melodic study, three-part harmony, and improvisation. Fundamentals of tone production and intonation are presented as learning aids, and historical background of selections is used to demonstrate style. All participants are furnished sheet music and an audio recording of the session.

Gifted and talented - Performance oriented, the program emphasizes high standards of musicianship. Students with exceptional musical aptitude are motivated to work in an advanced and challenging environment
Bilingual - The influence of African and European tradition on Texas style is integral to the program. Vocal repertoire particularly employs both English and Spanish lyrics.

Ensemble Workshop Lanny Fiel and core members of the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band demonstrate and offer instruction in performance as a musical ensemble. Fundamental principles of music are emphasized to combine fiddle, guitar, piano, acoustic bass, drums, and vocals. Students explore the interplay of tone production, timing, and dynamics to develop listening skills. Sheet music, handouts, and a recording of the session are furnished to each participant.

Dance Workshop Dance sessions conducted by Lanny Fiel and members of the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band focus on the basics of couples dancing in a traditional Texas style. Sessions include demonstration and instruction on two-step, waltz, polka, schottische, and specialty numbers, including “Ten Pretty Girls,” “Coming Through the Rye,” “Varsouviana,” and “Little Brown Jug.” Historical reference to custom and manners is incorporated in the workshop. Dance sessions with multiple classes culminate in a Ranch Dance.

Orchestra Workshop
Orchestra workshops directed by Lanny Fiel and members of the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band are designed to introduce classically trained musicians to the nuances of traditional Texas music. Arrangements of authentic works are employed to focus on historical background and the study of ensemble technique, tone production, and listening skills. Emphasis is placed on the parallels between opposing musical styles. Workshops are conducted in a rehearsal setting and culminate with a recording and Orchestra Concert.

Supplemental Programs
Presentations to district and inservice conferences offer teachers options for supplemental programs aligned with TEKS. The program especially promotes interdisciplinary studies within basic school curricula.
The program also offers hands-on experience using sound equipment and computer technology, including web development and digital recording.

Fiddle Group Lesson Group fiddle lessons conducted by Lanny Fiel are styled according to the level of proficiency of each individual participant in a session. Within the context of learning several tunes, students are exposed to the fundamentals of technique, ear training, harmony, improvisation, and style. Sheet music and a cassette recording of the lesson are furnished for each participant. Group lessons are designed to coordinate with both Fiddle Workshops and Ensemble Workshops.

Project Seminar A project seminar by Lanny Fiel provides information on how to establish and develop an arts oriented educational program. Drawing from over three decades of personal experience, Fiel offers an insightful presentation on his founding of the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band through a merging of music, history, education, and technology. Using the Ranch Band as a model, the seminar holds applications for similar programs and other projects in related or non-related fields.

Travel & Lodging Requirements Lanny Fiel and the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band travel throughout Texas and New Mexico.
A full compliment of the group consists of 11 band members with 5 chaperones for student musicians.
Maximum lodging requirements include 7 rooms each with 2 double beds.
Minimum mileage requirements include 2 equipment vehicles at .15 per mile each and 3 personnel vehicles at .08 per mile each. Solo or small ensemble troupes are also available
